Arcanum News: Coffee Conversation this Saturday

0

The Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society invites the community to their August Coffee and Conversation on Aug. 13 at 10 a.m. at 123 W. George St.

Sharing experiences will be Hubert Cromwell, Jim Hamilton, the Weimers, the Hoovers and Bill Young about growing up in Ithaca. Many of their families trace back to the early days when Ithaca was the central trading post of the area, where the Traction Line stopped, where Jacob Thomas had a large dry goods store, Dr. John Hamilton’s office was on Main Street and the Cromwell’s Greenhouse was “outside of town.” In 1959, the two-room school where many of these families attended closed its doors for the last time. It was one of the last of the one and two room schools to be used in Darke County. Many may also remember the church fire caused by a fuel tank falling from a National Guard airplane. Carolyn Miller Laird will also be sharing her memories of when her father was the post master and also had the grocery store for many years. Come and join them on August 13th to hear their stories and be prepared to share your stories, too. This is a great way to spend a Saturday morning, reminiscing and learning more about Darke County.

The Farmers Market is open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon located Veterans Park besides the Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society. If you are interested in being a vendor, please call Sharon Troutwine. More information on our web site www.arcanumhistoricalsociety.org. about summer events. Of course the AWTHS house will be open for tours, displays and research. And they will be open during The Tour de Donut event on Sept. 10.

Arcanum A# Club (AHS Music Boosters) are looking for volunteers! Sign ups for working the A# Concession Trailer at the Darke County Fair are now in full swing. The fair starts on Aug. 19 and goes through Aug. 27. If you would interested in helping out, please contact Eric Aukerman by phone or text at 937-423-3708 or email at [email protected]. The AHS Band was at Band Camp last week and is gearing up for marching band season with the Darke County Fair and football season. They appreciate the community’s support.

The Arcanum Public Library will host their end of the summer reading program with a party on Aug. 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fun activities and prize winners may pick their prizes at the event. Check out the library for their Movie Day(s) on Wednesdays – free popcorn is always served!

Arcanum School announces that the construction project is nearing completion. The last bricks and metal roofing panels have been installed! They are at the point of the project where the final details are being completed and we will soon see the construction signs gone. Please note: Areas of sidewalk that need to be removed and replaced will be done in the next few weeks. They will work to coordinate efforts so that there are multiple access points into the building; either the main entrance or the board entrance should remain… open (doors #1 and #3).

While they plan on having the shrubs, plants and flowers redone in time for school, most likely grass will not be reseeded until September. The BOE and administrator want to thank the community for all of your patience over the last two years; they all look forward to the completion of the project in the coming weeks. Please be aware of the following: be mindful of the additional traffic on and off the campus, the back parking lot is closed and is off limits at all hours-no playing basketball, the walking path will only be partially opened for walkers and is closed around the back of the building, parking for softball and baseball games is available in the front parking lot only, and various doors/entrances may be closed at times.

Congratulations to my cousin, Jim Troutwine on selling his 8,000 car. What an accomplishment in his career at Troutwine Auto Sales through the years! Ironically, the buyer of that 8,000th car was my sister, Deb (Troutwine) Ganger of Greenville. Troutwine Auto Sales has been in Arcanum since 1928 and has provided service to many in our community and the Miami Valley.
