Practices for high school fall sports teams officially begin in Darke County

DARKE COUNTY – Fall sports practices across Ohio officially began on Monday with all Ohio High School Athletic Association fall sports scheduled to begin the 2016 season this month.

High school cross country, football, golf, soccer, girls tennis and volleyball teams all were allowed to begin practice on Monday. Prior to Aug. 1 they were limited to summer conditioning programs and 10 days of coaching.

Golf is the first fall sport that will commence the 2016 season with regular season competition beginning on Friday.

Locally the Greenville boys and girls golf teams are scheduled to compete in the Greater Western Ohio Conference’s preseason meets on Friday at Beechwood Golf Course. The boys tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. with the girls tournament scheduled to follow at 1:30 p.m.

The Versailles girls golf team also will compete in a tournament on Friday. The Lady Tigers will travel to the Celina Lynx Golf Club, formerly the Fox’s Den Golf Course, for the Celina Invitational at 8:30 a.m. on Friday.

The Arcanum boys golf team will have its first dual meet of the season on Friday when the Trojans play host to Fort Recovery at 9 a.m. at Beechwood.

Prior to the regular season officially starting, a pair of golf scrimmages will be contested on Wednesday. The Arcanum, Greenville and Versailles girls golf teams all are scheduled to play in the Covington Lady Bucc Invitational at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Echo Hills Golf Course in Piqua. The Greenville boys golf team is scheduled to play in Northmont’s Dorwood Optimist Invitational at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at Beechwood.

Other fall sports will kick off their seasons later this month. Girls tennis can begin play on Aug. 12, Soccer teams can play regular season games starting on Aug. 19, volleyball matches can start on Aug. 20, and cross country meets and football games can start on Aug. 22.
