GREENVILLE – The Greenville girls tennis team began the 2016 season with a 3-2 win against Celina on Wednesday in Greenville.
Greenville won the match on the strength of its singles play as all three Lady Wave singles players won their matches. The Wave won the singles matches despite playing two freshmen and a sophomore in those positions.
“Great start for them,” Greenville girls tennis coach Jim Koontz said of his singles players. “I knew they would be good.”
Greenville freshman Natalie Milligan won her first singles match, defeating Celina’s Cami Mohler 6-1, 7-5. Sophomore Anna Manges beat Ally Harris in second singles 6-3, 6-4. In the third singles match Lady Wave freshman Abby Swenson beat Renee Zuercher 6-0, 6-1.
“I was really happy because they beat us last year 4-1 and they’ve got a lot of those kids back,” Koontz said. “All of their singles players were seniors.”
Celina won both of the doubles matches.
In first doubles Greenville’s Molly Hunt and Larisa Schmitmeyer lost 6-2, 6-3 to Breanna Jenkins and Miranda Rable. In the second doubles match the Lady Wave’s Amber Hutt and Addie Haupt lost to Allie Lehman and Christina Harting 6-1, 6-1.
Celina always is a strong team, Koontz said, so he was glad to start the season with a victory against the Bulldogs.
“I was really happy for them. They’ve worked hard,” he said of his players. “That should boost their confidence.”
