GREENVILLE — Rabbit entries are up 130 this year at the Great Darke County Fair.

But, not to worry. There will still be room for fair-goers to pass through the barn and exhibitors to do their thing.

Superintendent Richard Delk said to accommodate the extra entries, the cages are being stacked three high.

“We’ll survive,” he said. “They won’t block the aisle ways.”

He attributes the rise in entries to the cost of feeding a small animal vs. a large animal.

“I’m guessing that’s what it is,” said Delk. “It costs more to feed a large animal; a smaller animal is cheaper.”

The weigh-in meat pens and poster contest entries are due today, with rabbit royalty interviews set for tonight. On Saturday, the junior fair rabbit show will be held and Sunday will be the junior fair rabbit showmanship competition; and Tuesday, the Rabbit Skillathon and Rabbit Safari Breed Identification events will take place.

It was also noted that the junior fair small animal sale to include rabbits will be held at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the poultry barn and the junior fair Showman of Showmen contest will be held at noon on Thursday, which also includes rabbits.
