GREENVILLE – It was a great season of fishing for the Greenville natives Tayler Coy and Jake Pequignot.
In recent years these two fished in competitive bass tournaments in the Electric Bass Circuit and open tournaments.
This year they decided to step it up a bit into a more competitive league. The league they decided to fish was the Fisher’s of Men National Trail. This circuit represents numerous states throughout from the Midwest, Southern, Northern and Eastern regions of the country. They fished the Ohio Division side of this league, which included Indian Lake, Grand Lake St. Mary’s, Rocky Fork Lake, Lake Erie and Lake Loramie.
The season started off with a bang on April 30 at Indian Lake, finishing second out of 19 teams with 10.33 pounds. Following that the next tournament was held at Grand Lake St Mary’s on May 24th where they also finished second out of 17 teams with 15.05 pounds.
The third event was held at Rocky Fork where they broke through with a win out of 14 teams with 9.29 pounds, edging out second by only .01/.02.
The fourth event was held on Lake Erie on July 23 where they finished third out of 17 teams with 13.67 pounds. At this point in the season it became apparent they had a good shot at winning the points championship. With one tournament to go, they had a 10 point lead.
In the final tournament on August 13 at Lake Loramie, they finished sixth out of 19 teams with 5.55 pounds. With the team chasing them in second place finishing 11th, that solidified the points championship for Coy and Pequignot. They ended up winning the points, by 10 points, and weighing in a limit in each tournament.
By winning the points championship, this qualifies them to fish the national championship in April 2017 in Louisiana on the Red River.
Coy is a Greenville High School graduate and a graduate of the University of Toledo where he studied biology and environmental studies. He currently is employed as a horticulturist at Five Rivers Metro Parks and also as a soil scientist at Ag Spectrum Co.
Pequignot is a Greenville High School graduate and studied at the University of Toledo.
