COLDWATER – The Versailles football team fell to 4-4 on the season with a 14-7 loss to Coldwater on Friday night.

The Tigers were in the game until the end. A fourth down pass fell incomplete as time expired with the Tigers inside the Coldwater 30-yard line.

Versailles fell behind early 7-0 but tied the game at seven with nine second left in the first half.

The Tigers had an opportunity to take the lead in the third quarter but came up short on a fourth down play at the Cavalier 16-yard line. A measurement by the officials showed the ball short of the line to gain by about 4 inches.

Coldwater took the possession and then took the lead with: 48 seconds left in the third quarter. The Cavalier scoring drive was capped by a 31-yard touchdown run by Dylan Thobe.

The Cavaliers had a chance to score with eight minutes left in the fourth quarter but were turned away at the Tiger 9-yard line. The Tiger offense could not move the ball, though, and Versailles had to punt.

The Tigers then got the ball back when Alex Wendel intercepted a Cavalier pass and returned it to the Cavalier 38-yard line.

Versailles would move inside the Coldwater 15-yard line. On a fourth down play, the Cavaliers intercepted a Wendel pass, but A.J Ahrens wrestled the ball away and was down at the 5. A controversy ensued as to what actually happened on the play. The referee’s huddled and decided there was not a change of possession, and the Tigers were short of a first down by a yard.

The Tigers had one last opportunity to score when they took possession at their own 29-yard line with 2:28 left in the game. The Tigers drove to the Cavalier 27 but could not get any closer.

“We never give up but didn’t get it done,” Versailles coach Adam Miller said. “Defense has been playing great and we do things good offensively and we shoot ourselves in the foot and put ourselves in a tough spot, tough to get out of that.”

A Wendel pass went out of bounds as time expired.

Versailles will play host to Minster, who also is 4-4 this season, in the Tigers’ final home game of the season on Friday.
