Franklin Monroe volleyball team defeats Troy Christian in OHSAA tournament opener

TROY – Franklin Monroe had experienced a long dry spell when it comes to the Ohio High School Athletic Association sectional volleyball tournament, having dropped the opening game six years in a row.

It appeared the Jets were going to bow out early for the seventh time on Saturday. But with their back literally up against the wall, somehow they found the strength to push forward, making a miraculous comeback and stunning Troy Christian 25-16, 24-26, 12-25, 25-21, 15-13.

Things started well for the Jets as the team was communicating, passing and hitting well to take the first set 25-16.

In the second set both teams battled with neither able to take command as it went to the wire with Troy Christian pulling it out 26-24.

Set three turned out to be a back breaker and confidence shaker for Franklin Monroe. The Eagles jumped out to a quick 9-0 advantage and completely dominated the set, winning 25-12.

It was looking bleak for the Jets in the fourth set as Troy Christian jumped out in front again 6-0 and Coach Angie Filbrun needed another timeout to try and stave off another runaway set.

“We talked about digging deep. Now was the time to change it up, and we had to find it right then and there,” Filbrun said.

Whatever Coach said the girls must have dug deep spurned on with the support of a vocal Franklin Monroe crowd as the Jets battled back to earn the fourth set win 25-21.

“I’m proud of the girls. They are a young and inexperienced, and they could have just folded … but they did a great job of pulling it together and battling back,” Filbrun said.

It all came down to a final set to 15, and much like the entire contest it would go to the wire with Jets pulling out the dramatic win, 15-13.

“I’m super proud of them. They started to believe in themselves and started to make plays instead of worrying about the score or mistakes. Before they were hanging their head and their confidence was down, but they grew up a little today and realize they can do what we have told them all year long,” Filbrun said.

“There are great things to come for Franklin Monroe volleyball, and we have a lot to look forward to in the future,” Filbrun concluded.

With the win Franklin Monroe advances to the second round of the OHSAA Troy volleyball sectional tournament where the Jets will take on Emmanuel Christian at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
