Minster dashes Versailles football team’s playoff hopes

VERSAILLES – The Versailles football team saw its playoff hopes disappear with a disappointing 15-12 loss to Minster Friday night.

The Tigers failed to make an extra point and then missed a two-point conversion that ultimately led to the three-point loss.

Versailles struggled with field position in the first half as Minster played most of the first half on the Tigers’ side of the field.

“I don’t know if we crossed the 50 the first half,” Versailles coach Adam Miller said. “We couldn’t get going.”

The Versailles defense stepped up in the first half, though. With the Tiger offense out of sync, the defense stopped Minster twice inside the Tiger red zone.

The Tigers held on a fourth down play at the 2-yard line and later caused a fumble to stop the Wildcats.

Minster scored first in the third quarter on a quarterback run. The extra point made it 7-0.

The Tigers came right back with a score of their own on an Alex Wendel pass to Sam Barga. The drive was aided by a 40-yard pass play. The extra point was blocked to keep Minster in front 7-6.

Versailles took the lead for a short time on touchdown pass, putting the Tigers up 12-7. They went for a two-point conversion, but a pass to A.J. Ahrens was incomplete. The missed extra points opened the door for Minster.

The Wildcats scored with 5:22 left in the game and with a 13-12 lead decided to go for two.

“To hold them to two touchdowns is good,” Miller said. “Offensively we’re not getting it done.”

The Minster conversion was good, giving the Wildcats a 15-12 lead.

“The kids played very hard, and we just came up short,” Miller said “It’s happened too many time this year and very frustrating.”

The Wildcats were able to stop the Tigers on their next possession and hold on for the win.

Versailles dropped to 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the Midwest Athletic Conference with the loss. The Tigers conclude the regular season at New Bremen on Friday.
