Versailles girls advance to regional cross country meet

CEDARVILLE – The Versailles girls plus seven individuals from Darke County schools qualified for the Ohio High School Athletic Association regional cross country meet with their performances on Saturday in the district meets at Cedarville.

All eight of the Darke County schools competed in the district meets at Cedarville, four of which had student-athletes qualify for regionals. Along with the Versailles girls, Arcanum’s Marcy Bradshaw, Arcanum’s Tanner Delk, Arcanum’s Isaac Stephens, Bradford’s Karmen Knepp, Franklin Monroe’s Cole Good, Versailles’ Noah Pleiman and Versailles’ Joe Spitzer all advanced to Saturday’s regional meet in Troy.

The top team performance from Darke County was by the Versailles girls, who finished sixth out of 18 teams in the Division II girls race to earn a spot at the regional meet along with Tippecanoe, Bellbrook, Springfield Shawnee, Alter, Oakwood and Carroll.

Megan Rismiller led the Versailles girls by finishing 17th overall in a time of 20:41.87. Also for the Lady Tigers, Liz Watren finished 24th in 20:45.71, Kara Spitzer finished 27th in 20:52.44, Kenia McEldowney finished 31st in 21:05.06, Emma Peters finished 35th in 21:09.08, Brynna Blakeley finished 55th in 21:42.66, and Hannah Bey finished 66th in 22:06.15.

Greenville also competed in the Division II girls race along with Versailles, finishing 11th out of 18 teams. Hayley Maher led the Lady Wave by finishing 47th in a time of 21:31.28, Grace Coakley finished 53rd in 21:39.76, Brooke Perreira finished 59th in 21:48.48, Tiffany Strobel finished 70th in 22:16.13, Rachel Unger finished 108th in 23:43.50, Brianna Hartle finished 115th in 24:14.16, and Chloe Sowry finished 119th in 24:25.43.

Alter’s Perri Bockrath won the Division II girls race, which included 143 runners, in a time of 18:52.31. Alter’s Julia Ouellette set the cut-off time for qualifying for regionals at 20:57.14 by finishing 28th overall.

The top finish by a local individual came from Bradford’s Karmen Knepp, who won the Division III girls race in 18:57.99. She beat Springfield Catholic Central’s Addy Engel, the second place finisher, by two seconds for the district championship.

Arcanum’s Marcy Bradshaw finished sixth overall in the Division III girls race, which included 178 runners, in a time of 19:54.06 to earn a spot at regionals along with Karmen Knepp.

The top finish among Darke County teams in the Division III girls race was by Franklin Monroe, who finished 15th out of 23 teams. Selene Weaver led the Lady Jets by finishing 47th in 22:15.83, Nicole Brocious finished 72nd in 23:01.79, Cayley Baker finished 94th in 24:17.78, Danielle McVey finished 112th in 25:02.57, Taylor Hackney finished 134th in 26:39.21, Hannah Berry finished 146th in 27:29.12, and Scout Meyer finished 152nd in 28:02.63.

Led by Marcy Bradshaw’s sixth place finish, the Arcanum girls finished 16th as a team. Also for the Lady Trojans, Mara Wetzel finished 50th in 22:20.36, Kayla O’Daniel finished 110th in 24:58.64, Lana Johnson finished 154th in 28:08.22, Mekenna Gunckel finished 176th in 35:58.00, and Marlee Hess finished 178th in 39:31.44.

The Ansonia girls finished 17th as a team. Olivia Wright led the Lady Tigers as she finished 73rd in 23:06.25, Skyler Marker finished 103rd in 24:28.71, Stefani Garrett finished 109th in 24:47.42, Katie Werts finished 132nd in 26:35.69, Amber Bergman finished 135th in 26:43.41, Aleesha Gates finished 174th in 34:44.67, and Millie Widener finished 175th in 34:55.04.

Tri-Village’s girls finished 22nd. Lissa Siler led the Lady Patriots by finishing 92nd in 24:13.09, Shelby Holzapfel finished 116th in 25:16.31, Becky O’Connor finished 118th in 25:19.30, MacKenzie Stucky finished 145th in 27:24.35, and Kathryn Combs finished 164th in 30:23.47.

Mississinawa Valley’s girls team finished 23rd. Casey Carrico led the Lady Hawks by finishing 168th in 33:05.55, Isabella Barga finished 169th in 33:20.49, Abby Abel finished 170th in 33:42.79, Lindsay Wright finished 173rd in 34:35.55, and Piper Phillips finished 177th in 37:19.83.

The Bradford girls, who were led by Karmen Knepp, didn’t have enough runners to record a team score. Also for the Lady Railroaders, Maia Stump finished 91st in 24:11.93, and Elisa Martinez finished 117th in 25:19.24.

Covington, Russia, Fort Loramie, West Liberty-Salem, Miami East, Xenia Legacy Christian, Milton-Union and Springfield Catholic Central qualified for regionals as teams in the Division III girls race. Fort Loramie’s Avory Smith finished 32nd overall to set the cut-off time for qualifying for regionals at 21:28.84.

In the Division III boys race Franklin Monroe’s Cole Good finished fifth overall in 16:44.22, Arcanum’s Tanner Delk finished 18th in 17:21.33 and Arcanum’s Isaac Stephens finished 21st in 17:27.73 to qualify for regionals.

Led by Cole Good, Franklin Monroe was Darke County’s top team in the Division III boys race, finishing 12th out of 30 squads. Also for the Jets, Zach Gilliland finished 56th in 18:17.91, John Myers finished 72nd in 18:38.74, Ross Thayer finished 107th in 19:35.63, Jacob Meyer finished 129th in 20:07.09, Justin Chen finished 147th in 20:46.61, and Isaac Schmitmeyer finished 163rd in 21:16.62.

The Arcanum boys, who were led by Tanner Delk and Isaac Stephens, finished 13th as a team. Also for the Trojans, Chance Klipstine finished 60th in 18:23.92, Ethan Moores finished 148th in 20:47.80, Jimmy Barry finished 187th in 23:07.42, Mitchel Wogomon finished 193rd in 23:49.54, and Auris Alderman finished 199th in 24:51.07.

Jay Roberts finished 61st overall in a time of 18:25.01 to lead Bradford’s boys, who finished 19th as a team. Also for the Railroaders, Johnny Fike finished 63rd in 18:25.97, Jackson Moore finished 80th in 18:47.96, Shane Bryan finished 164th in 21:19.29, and Kurt Hoover finished 184th in 23:04.01.

The Ansonia boys, who finished 30th as a team, were led by Brandon Thornhill finishing 177th in 21:59.61. Also for the Tigers, Daniel Shaner finished 178th in 21:59.79, Michael Hall finished 180th in 22:04.56, Tyler Neal finished 182nd in 22:53.12, and Jacob Vietor finished 196th in 24:29.87.

Landen Fraylick finished 143rd in 20:33.96 to lead Tri-Village’s boys, who didn’t have enough runners to record a team score. Also for the Patriots, Kamron Berghoff finished 185th in 23:04.03, and Cameron Armstrong finished 197th in 24:36.56.

Dalton Marker led the Mississinawa Valley boys, who didn’t have enough runners for a team score, by finishing 171st in 21:47.31. Also for the Blackhawks, Kaine Daniels finished 201st in 25:04.61.

Bethel’s Korry Hamlin won the Division III boys race, which included 208 runners, with a time of 16:26.15. National Trail’s Weston Haws set the cut-off time for individuals to advance to regionals by finishing 36th overall in 17:53.33.

Fort Loramie, Anna, National Trail, Miami East, Houston, Milton-Union, Russia, West Liberty-Salem and Troy Christian were the Division III boys teams that advanced to regionals.

Versailles finished 10th out of 24 teams in the Division II boys race. Carroll, Springfield Shawnee, Eaton, Tippecanoe, Chaminade Julienne, Brookville and Oakwood advanced to the regional meet as teams.

Versailles’ Joe Spitzer finished second overall with a time of 16:19.54 in the Division II boys race while Noah Pleiman finished 13th in 16:58.36, putting both through to the regional meet as individuals. Also for the Tigers, Brooks Blakeley finished 68th in 18:37.51, Adam Gehret finished 85th in 19:02.81, Stuart Baltes finished 87th in 19:03.85, Mitchell Huelskamp finished 91st in 19:10.03, and Jacob Wenig finished 104th in 19:33.18.

Carroll’s Mike Laughlin won the Division II boys race, which included 166 runners, in 16:17.87, less than two seconds ahead of Joe Spitzer. Valley View’s Trevor Paringer set the cut-off time for individuals qualifying to regionals at 17:19.75 by finishing 28th overall.

Greenville finished 14th out of 25 teams in the Division I boys race. Centerville, Lebanon, Beavercreek, Bellbrook, Miamisburg, Fairmont, Middletown and Vandalia-Butler qualified for the regionals as teams.

Caleb Browder led the Greenville boys as he finished 49th overall in 17:45.20. Also for the Green Wave, Andrew Kocher finished 73rd in 18:20.67, Seth Unger finished 80th in 18:34.65, Jacob Subler finished 86th in 18:42.58, Jack Holbrook finished 117th in 19:32.84, Matt Karns finished 118th in 19:34.40, and Levi Emerick finished 143rd in 20:45.65.

Middletown’s Conant Smith won the Division I boys race, which included 173 runners, in a time of 15:57.84. Butler’s Gabe Warren set the cutoff time for individuals to advance to the regionals by finishing 32nd in 17:07.27.

The runners who advanced now will compete in the OHSAA regional meet on Saturday in Troy. Competition will begin at 11 a.m. with the Division III boys race, which will be followed by the Division II boys race at 11:45 a.m. The Division III girls race will start at 1:30 p.m. with the Division II girls race to follow at 2:15 p.m.
