Versailles volleyball team defeats West Liberty-Salem for OHSAA sectional championship

BROOKVILLE—Coach Kenzie Bruggeman wanted her Versailles volleyball team to play like “one well-oiled machine” Saturday’s matchup versus West Liberty-Salem in a sectional final of the Ohio High School Athletic Association tournament.

That’s exactly the performance she got, as the Lady Tigers dismantled West Liberty-Salem 25-8, 25-7 and 25-10.

Versailles never trailed in the sectional championship match. The Tigers were dominant from the opening whistle of each set. They took commanding leads of 10-2, 11-2 and 13-2 to begin each set respectively. An extremely powerful display along the front line staked the Tigers to these margins, and they were never seriously challenged.

“The key is to spread the ball around, establish our main hitters,” Coach Bruggeman said. “This gives us one-on-one opportunities. We have three hitters at all times. We need to use them.”

If the hitters are having a great day, something that sometimes goes overlooked is the skillfulness of those setting up the hitters.

“They had great body control,” Bruggeman said. “They put the ball on the net and side to side area.”

When asked about possible complacency concerning the game because Versailles already had beaten West Liberty-Salem, Coach Bruggeman said, “It was about not letting our guard down until we have 25 under our name in the third.”

Versailles now moves into the 2016 Division III district tournament Saturday. The Tigers play in game three of a triple-header at Northmont High School with their match set to begin at 6 p.m.
