ANSONIA – Ansonia outscored Covington 16-14 in the second half but lost 63-16 to Covington in the Tigers’ season finale on Friday in Ansonia.
Covington scored 28 points in the first quarter and 21 in the second quarter to build a 49-0 halftime lead. Ansonia outscored Covington 8-0 in the third quarter, and then in the fourth quarter Covington added 14 points while Ansonia scored eight more for the 63-16 final score.
Aydan Sanders led Ansonia with 87 rushing yards on 16 carries Friday night. Max Wardrip carried the ball 11 times for 44 yards and a touchdown. Brock Shellhaas scored the Tigers’ other touchdown, carrying the ball four times for 14 yards.
Ansonia had 199 total rushing yards but -5 passing yards, completing just one of seven passes.
Defensively Wardrip with six tackles and Sanders with five tackles led Ansonia.
Ansonia finished the season with a 2-8 overall record and a 2-6 Cross County Conference record. Covington went undefeated at 10-0 and 8-0 in the CCC.
Friday’s game marked the end of the high school football careers of Ansonia seniors Trevor Beam and Max Wardrip.
