Union City police chief gets another new title

UNION CITY, Ohio — Union City, Ohio, Police Chief/Interim Fire Chief Mark Ater gained another title at the recent village council meeting. He is also now the public safety director.

“The position can be both the police chief and chief but in this case, Pam Idle is still the fire chief, and is still on administrative leave,” said Fiscal Officer Karen Stubbs.

According to Stubbs, the public safety director would supervise both the police chief and fire chief’s positions.

“So, at this time, Ater is the public safety director, police chief and until the other matter is resolved, the interim fire chief,” Stubbs explained. “The way the job description reads the village can have the same person be over both the police and fire departments or they can appoint separate people to each chief’s position, and the public safety director would be their immediate supervisor.”

Before the decision was made, Mayor Zach Pruitt, at the meeting, stated that he has received one in-house letter of interest from Ater. It was noted that the mayor had interviewed the candidate and recommended the appointment of Ater to the position.

Additional personnel action was taken at the meeting.

The mayor asked council to appoint the council seat vacated by Shane Crawford. The village, it was reported, had received two letters of interest from Eric Rust and Tom Pugh. However, Pugh had withdrawn his request for consideration for the council seat. Rust, who was present, at the meeting was asked various questions, and was subsequently appointed to fill that vacant seat.

Four applications — one for police patrolman and the other three for fire/rescue — were discussed at the meeting, and as a result, the following were hired, as follows:

• Police patrolman — Jeffrey Nisonger, who lives in Lebanon Ohio, but his family lives in Darke County. He is self-employed so has flexible availability. He was approved pending background check and drug screen.

• Fire/rescue — Anthony Fletcher, who lives in Arcanum, holds a firefighter 1 and 2 certificate and EMT basic. Drug screen is done; just waiting on background check to come back.

•Fire/rescue — Gregory Baker holds firefighter and EMT certificates. Background check and drug screen are done.

• Fire/rescue — Douglas Garner holds firefighter and paramedic certificates. Background check and drug screen done.
