Tri-Village girls basketball team defeats Franklin Monroe in the Bill Burkett Tournament

NEW MADISON – Game two of the Bill Burkett Tournament pitted the host Tri-Village Lady Patriots against the Lady Jets of Franklin Monroe.

The more experienced Lady Patriots used their physical edge and pressurized defense to take control of the game early and cruise to a 53-27 victory.

In the early going of the game Franklin Monroe held its own against Tri-Village. Slowly the Lady Patriots began building a lead that reached 10-2 with 1:51 remaining, which forced a Lady Jet time out.

The Lady Patriots then unleashed the game changer of Friday night’s contest, a three-quarter court zone trapping press that stymied Franklin Monroe on many possessions throughout the rest of the game. Tri-Village in the next 9:51 until halftime would extend its advantage to 30-8 thanks to turnovers created by the press and the transition opportunities it gave them.

“We had a lot of young girls out there today,” Franklin Monroe girls basketball coach Abbey Moore said. “They got their feet wet tonight. We have a lot of learning to do. Defensively, thought we gave a good effort. We’ve just got to learn how to handle that pressure now. That got us in trouble against that full-court press.”

Although the Lady Patriots enjoyed a large lead, there were still things to improve upon.

“We need to be better,” Tri-Village coach Brad Gray said. “We were lackadaisical. The offense was out of sync. We got the looks we wanted. The execution of the offense was there. We just couldn’t finish.”

As the third quarter opened Tri-Village unleashed a new wrinkle defensively, a two-three zone with trapping principles. This caused numerous Lady Jet turnovers and paved the way for a 19-4 surge during period three, which at its conclusion found the Lady Patriots leading 49-12.

Franklin Monroe continued to fight on as they put together a 15 point fourth quarter

“Some of these girls this was their first varsity experience,” Coach Moore said. “Hope we can learn from our mistakes.”

Tri-Village Coach Gray said, “We’ve just got to make shots. They just weren’t falling, but we still got out with the W.”

The Lady Patriots were led in scoring by Allie Downing, who had a game-high 24 points and Danika Mann and Trisa Porter each with seven. For Franklin Monroe, the Jets were paced by Chloe Brumbaugh and Corina Conley with six each.

Tri-Village advanced to face Arcanum in the championship game and Franklin Monroe moved on to face Ansonia the consolation game.
