Greenville’s Brooke Perreira signs letter of intent to run for IU East

GREENVILLE – Greenville senior Brooke Perreira knew she wanted to run for Indiana University East, and she made it happen, signing her letter of intent to run for the Red Wolves on Friday afternoon.

“A little nerve-wracking,” Perreira said of making her college commitment. “I’m going to go off to college, and it’s kind of scary. I’ve never been away from my family and all my teammates and my coaches, but I’m excited. It will be a new experience for me, and I’m excited to take part in it.”

Perreira, the daughter of Nic and Shawna Perreira, initiated the recruiting process with IU East after deciding it was the perfect university for her.

“They do have an excellent nursing program, which is something I’m really interested in going into,” she said. “And it’s also fairly close to home so it won’t be too far away. And they have a very excellent cross country program, and it’s something I wanted to pursue obviously. So just had everything I wanted in a college.”

Knowing she’s still passionate about running, Perreira contacted IU East cross country coach Brett Crowley to see if the Red Wolves would have a spot for her on their roster.

“I knew I wanted to continue to run in college,” Perreira said. “Running’s always been a part of me. It’s something I love, it’s my passion, and I knew I wouldn’t want to stop after high school. So after I decided that IU East was the college academically for me I decided I wanted to run for them so I pursued him and asked him if I could consider running for them.”

Crowley, who also is an assistant track and field coach at IU East, was impressed by Perreira’s abilities and saw a lot of potential in the Greenville senior.

“She’s been a solid 20, 21-minute runner from high school and I think has a lot of potential to go further and go lower than that in college,” Crowley said. “And in track, too, we’ll see what that brings, too. Has a lot of potential and is joining a great group. We’re on the move and on the rise, and I think she definitely will contribute early on.”

Perreira’s high school cross country coach, Stephanie Lind, also sees a lot of room for improvement in her.

“I think she’ll do fantastic,” Lind said. “I can’t wait to see her improve even more and grow with their program.”

In college Perreira has set a goal of breaking 20 minutes in the 5K and maintaining at least a 3.5 GPA in the classroom. After graduation she plans to get her master’s degree and become a nurse practitioner.

“I think it’s fantastic,” Lind said. “I think IU East is a great fit for Brooke with the nursing program and continuing her career running in college. She’s going to be a huge asset for them. She’s just a really hard worker and a really great student.”
