ARCANUM — The mayor of Arcanum has announced she is taking a temporary break from the job.
Mayor Judith Foureman said she will be taking a 90-day leave of absence effective February 20 to deal with health issues.
Foureman has been mayor of Arcanum for five years. In making the announcement, she wanted to notify Arcanum residents that village government will continue to function in her absence.
“I wanted to let people know who to contact if they had questions while I’m away,” she said.
During Foureman’s absence, Arcanum Village Council President Bonnie Millard will serve as acting mayor. Residents may contact the village by phone at 937-692-8500 with any questions or concerns.
In other news, Arcanum’s move to approve a candidate as the new village administrator was postponed during the council’s Tuesday night meeting.
Council had originally intended to appoint Bill Kessler as village administrator during a special meeting held February 7. However, Village Solicitor Nicole Pohlman pointed out that because the ordinance to hire Kessler was not read at that meeting, council was required to reconsider the legislation at Tuesday night’s meeting.
Only four out of five council members in attendance voted to suspend second and third readings of the legislation approving the appointment of Kessler to the position. Councilman Monte Clark voted against the suspension. As an affirmative vote by all council members are needed to waive the readings, the measure will receive second and third readings during council’s March meetings.
Arcanum has been without a village administrator since former administrator Bill Sinnes resigned in October 2016. Many of his duties have been handled by Foureman in the interim.
