Religion bee helps students learn their faith

GREENVILLE – A Religion Bee took place at St. Mary’s School, Tuesday, Feb. 14.

This was the first Religion Bee at the school in recent years, according to school Principal Vernon Rosenbeck. Between two and four representative from the third-eighth grade classes participated. According to Monica Masso-Rivetti, coordinator of Elementary Religious Education and Religion Teacher for fifth-eighth grades, the students studied and took practice tests.

“We decided who would best represent each class, based on those who scored most of the answers correctly,” she said. “It’s a fun way to see how well they are doing.”

The bee was a double round, double elimination competition, which meant the students could miss two times. Questions were called out to the students, and answers were written and held-up on pieces of paper for the judges to see and tally. The judges were Principal Rosenbeck, and Religion Bee coordinators: third and fourth grade Teacher Kathy Pierri and Masso-Rivetti.

Questions came from the “New Catholic Quiz” books, at the fourth and seventh grade-grade levels. The competition started with fourth-grade questions and then moved onto the more difficult seventh-grade questions, of multiple choice, true false and some fill-in-the-blank.

“Please do not give out any answers through facial expressions or talking,” Masso-Rivetti said to the audience. “Keep a very straight face.”

The subject-matter of the questions were varied, but all had to do with the teachings of the church. Some of the questions included: Whose name is a christian baptized in? A. the name of Jesus, b. the name of Jesus, Mary and Joseph, or c. the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit; The church believes that Mary was taken both body and soul into heaven when she died: true or false; What feast recalls the time when Mary first heard that she would give birth to Jesus?; When did Jesus become angry? a. at the wedding feast of Cana, b. at the temple in Jerusalem, c. at the agony in the garden; and How do we become good people? a. by getting ahead of others, b. by becoming independent, or c. by practicing virtues.

Prizes for the first three winners included chocolates and some religious medals. Masso-Rivetti and Pierri would like to see the Religion Bee become an annual event.
