GREENVILLE – Cassie Cromwell drove in six runs with a two-run triple and a grand slam to lead the Greenville softball team to a 13-1 run rule victory over Beavercreek on Wednesday.
Greenville’s bats were hot from the beginning of the game will back-to-back singles by Morgan Gilbert and Karsyn Shaffer to lead off the bottom half of the first inning. Gilbert scored on passed ball, which was ball four to Makayla Hanes, then Cromwell cranked a two-run triple into left field to make it 3-0.
Cromwell scored moments later on a sacrifice fly by Alli Hill to put the Lady Wave up 4-0.
In the second inning the hits kept coming. Courtney Bryson singled and scored on a RBI double by Gilbert. Shaffer then hit a sacrifice grounder that drove in Gilbert and made it 6-0.
After a double by Hanes and a walk to Cromwell, Sydney Grote drove a two-run double into left to make it 8-0. Hill followed that up with a RBI single to increase the lead to 9-0.
In the third inning Bryson was hit by a pitch, Gilbert singled and Shaffer walked to load the bases. Then with two outs Cromwell jacked a pitch over the wall for a grand slam, putting the Wave up 13-0.
“Great day out of Cromwell,” Greenville softball coach Jerrod Newland said. “She’s a stud hitter.”
Greenville recorded 10 hits in Wednesday’s game while Beavercreek was held to three, all of which came in the fifth inning.
Baylee Petry pitched three innings of no-hit ball, striking out three and walking three. Fellow freshman Caitlin Christman retired the first four batters she faced before Danielle Young broke up the no-hitter with an infield single. Natasha Price and Raidyn Johnson also recorded hits to get Beavercreek a run.
“When you’ve only got five kids that drive in the program, obviously young kids have to play,” Newland said. “It’s just fun to have young kids that are experienced. If you have young kids that are inexperienced it’s not a lot of fun. But when you have young, experienced kids it’s a lot of fun. We’re going to play six, seven of the young kids this year, and they’re going to go out and compete and do well.”
Cromwell led Greenville’s offense by going 2-for-2 with a walk, a triple, a home run and six RBI. Gilbert was 3-for-3 with a double and a RBI. Shaffer was 1-for-1 with a walk.
Hanes went 1-for-2 with a double. Hill was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Grote was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Bryson was 1-for-1 with a walk.
Greenville, which suffered its first loss of the season to Lebanon on Tuesday, is now 3-1 on the season. The Wave will travel to Stebbins on Friday.
