GREENVILLE – The Greenville Walmart donated $400 worth of merchandise to the Greenville High School volleyball team on Monday as part of a fundraiser for the Lady Wave.

The Greenville volleyball program will host a Junior Olympic volleyball tournament this weekend. The items donated by Walmart will be sold as concessions at the tournament to help the Wave raise money for their program.

“We really appreciate Walmart’s donations this year,” Greenville assistant coach Janelle Rinderle said. “We look forward to seeing competitive volleyball.”

The volleyball action will begin on Saturday with 12 teams from across Ohio competing in a tournament for girls 14 and younger. Play will continue on Sunday with a 12-team tournament for girls 16 and younger. In all, there will be approximately 150 players and coaches each day plus spectators.

Greenville’s high school volleyball players will work at the tournament this weekend. The team will raise money through club teams’ entry fees, concession sales, T-shirt sales and sales of small volleyball accessories.

“Walmart has been generous enough to donate some of this stuff that way we don’t have to pay for it out of pocket,” Greenville volleyball coach Chelsea Dowd said. “The more we can just get donated the more money goes straight to the program.”

Last year Greenville hosted the club volleyball tournament for the first time and raised $4,000 that weekend.

“The money goes to some of the camps that we do over the summer and also helps keep the cost of our sport down,” Rinderle said.

By keeping volleyball affordable, Greenville’s coaches said they can keep girls interested in the sport.

Walmart makes monthly donations to the local schools and community, Assistant Manager Christina Harris said.

“Walmart is very committed in helping the schools and town through donations,” she said.
