DARKE COUNTY — Darke County residents seeking to declutter their homes of broken, unwanted or potentially hazardous items will have a number of opportunities throughout the summer and fall as the Darke County Solid Waste District has announced four recycling days for 2017.

The first event is Electronics Recycling Day, scheduled for May 25. The event is free to any Darke County resident, non-profit organization or business, but pre-registration is required to participate. It will take place at the Swine Barn at the Darke County Fairgrounds, 800 Sweitzer Street, Greenville, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pre-registration for the event must be submitted no later than 4:30 p.m. by May 12. The form can be filled out online or printed out and mailed to the Solid Waste District.

“We ask for weights and sizes so we know what kind of room we’re going to need for the semis,” said Krista Fourman, director of Darke County Solid Waste.

Fourman says the recycler will accept any electronic item (“Anything with a cord,” she said) with the exception of so-called “white goods,” such as refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers.

The items accepted will include computer equipment such as monitors and towers.

“We will be drilling hard drives on site for added security,” she said.

Next on the list of recycling events is Community Shred Day, June 10, from 9 a.m. to noon. No pre-registration is required.

Shred Day offers area residents the opportunity to shred paper documents containing sensitive or private information, such as bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, and other personal information. The shredding is done on site.

Mercer Savings Bank is a co-sponsor of the event. It will be held at the Ohio Center at the Darke County Fairgrounds.

Tire Recycling Day is September 20. It will be held at 1-Shot Services, 6377 Hahn Road, in Bradford. Like Electronics Recycling, pre-registration is required for this event, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Participants may bring in no more than 25 passenger tires for free. Participants may also drop off 10 semi-truck tires and up to five tractor tires. The first 10 semi-truck tires are free, with additional tires accruing a $10 fee. The first five tractor tires are $5 each, and $15 for each additional tire.

On October 7, the district will host Household Hazardous Waste Day, also at the Swine Barn at the Darke County Fairgrounds. No pre-registration is required. This event will have a 15-can limit on paint cans, herbicides, pesticides, varnishes, and cleaning chemicals. No 55-gallon drums will be accepted. Hours for this event are 8 a.m. to noon.

Fourman wishes to thank the Ohio EPA, the Darke County Board of Commissioners, the Darke County Solid Waste Policy Committee, the Darke County Sheriff’s Office, and many volunteers too numerous to mention for their help in keeping Darke County clean and hazard-free.
