COVINGTON – Ansonia led 8-2 early in Wednesday’s Cross County Conference baseball game at Covington but ended up losing 18-9.
After Covington took a 2-0 lead in the first inning, Ansonia went up 8-2 in the top half of the second. Covington quickly regained the lead, though, with 13 runs in the bottom of the second. Ansonia scored its final run in the fifth inning while Covington added a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.
Ansonia had six hits and eight errors, and Covington had 14 hits and three errors.
Tyler Neal was 2-for-3 with two doubles, a walk, a run and two RBI. Devyn Sink went 2-for-5 with a double, a stolen base, a run and two RBI. Ethan Fischer was 1-for-2 with a walk, a RBI and a run. Rygh Fortkamp was 1-for-3 with a walk, a RBI and a run.
Kane Kimmel walked twice, was hit by a pitch, stole two bases and scored two runs. Lane Clark walked twice, stole a base and scored a run. Keith Burk and Josh Heitkamp both walked once and scored a run.
Burk was charged with the loss as he pitched 1 1/3 innings, allowing seven earned runs and four unearned runs on six hits, two walks, one hit batter and three strikeouts. Clark pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs and three unearned runs on eight hits, two walks, one hit batter and five strikeouts. Sink pitched one inning and allowed one unearned run on no hits and two walks.
