Everyone has a story and everyone has a mother; that includes the homeless, orphaned, and abused.
In truth no young woman enters the role of motherhood feeling fully prepared for every situation of which they will be confronted. Some mothers aren’t as up to the task as others. That’s life, it might thwart their children for a while, but not forever. Eventually everyone has to make a conscience choice to embrace the good memories and let go of any shortcomings or traumas of their childhood.
There is no single standard of behavior for mothers, just as there is no single personality for all children. It’s human nature to play the blame game, blaming others for their failures or disappointments. Although it took a few generations to get here parents are now at the top of that list.
Each generation gets a little more liberal than the previous; pushing, blurring or crossing the lines of legality, conduct and morality. Which is the best reason for grandparent’s to remain active in the lives of their grandchildren. Grandparents have opportunity to retard the gradual deterioration of human society. So do teachers, police officers, business professionals and virtually every adult. An adult can nurture what a child feels is missing within their lives.
The bottom line is no one had or has the perfect childhood. Everyone has baggage and each of us has the choice of looking for the silver lining or in wallowing in the past. No matter what our age it’s time to forgive and forget memories that bind us and replace them with happy ones that propel us forward toward the life we had envisioned.
Take the time to remember your mother with love and reverence. She loves you more than she can ever show or say. And for those of us who think babies should come with an instruction manual, there is truly good news. There is a really great manual, an age old compilation of wisdom, continually on the best seller list and known as the bible. It’s a great resource for all of us, with or without children.
Happy Mother’s Day to all our beautiful mothers! Here’s a poem for them:
Dear Father who art in Heaven.
Let me have patience when tiny hands
Tug at me with their small demands.
Let me be gentle and wise.
Keep my lips from hasty replies.
Please don’t let sleepless nights or noise
Hinder my mind and sight of life’s fleeting joys.
Dear Lord, in years to come my house is still
Only sweet memories its room may fill.
Amen
