Sweet & Sassy: Recycling becomes hobby

0

One thing I am proud to say I am doing is recycling and I’ve been doing it for quite a number of years. It makes me feel better about myself because I am helping preserve our environment.

Since my apartment is small, I combine my recyclables; I put the paper and cardboard in one bag; and bottles, plastic and aluminum in another bag. I also save egg cartons for a local pantry and plastic bags for whomever needs them.

I have been saving drink bottle caps for a long time and recently learned that a person can also recycle medicine bottle and caps.

According to the Ohio State University Extension, the collection of plastic caps helps provide benches for public use. Tri-Village School can attest to that as it is benefiting from the drive down there last year.

Extension reports indicate the following are acceptable caps and lids, in addition to the ones I’ve already mentioned, for recycling: milk jug caps, detergent caps, hair spray caps, toothpaste tube caps, deodorant caps, cottage cheese container lids, mayonnaise jar lids, yogurt lids, peanut butter jar lids, ice cream bucket lids under eight inches, flip-top caps on such condiments as ketchup and mustard, spray paint caps, ointment tube caps, caps with recycle numbers [2, 4 and 5], Cool Whip container lids, coffee can lids, cream cheese container lids, butter container lids and prescription bottles with labels removed.

I have plenty of medicine bottles but have a hard time getting off all of the labels.

Not acceptable for recycling are: Metal of any kind, drink bottles, plastic type Zip-lock bags, trigger sprayer, fast food drink lids, food containers, soap pumps, lotion pumps or grocery bags.

It was noted that caps may be dropped off at the Extension Office, 603 Wagner Ave., Greenville, during normal business hours or by special arrangement.

Like so many people who no longer have their parents around, their loved ones are missed.

Kelly Fliehman is one of those people. Her father, Jim Crotcher, died May 23, 2016, following a three-year battle with cancer. While going through things, she found a message he wrote. It reads: “I would like to thank all the people who prayed for me, sent cards, phone calls, greetings and food during my journey to fight cancer.”

She and his other family members — wife Shirley, daughters Kim, Kristi and Kelly — and grandchildren share that expression of appreciation that he penned.

A family member also written this poem in memory of the patriarch of the family, entitled “My Dad.”

A husband, a father, a grandpa, a friend,

A sheepherder, a Realtor, a feed salesman

My dad was many things throughout his life,

But most of all he loved humor, just ask his wife.

Many times we would laugh until we cried.

I laughed so hard it would hurt my side.

So many funny things you would do,

Like scaring your nurses at night, saying “Boo!”

So much laughter and joy you have brought.

We will NEVER forget how hard you fought!

The most important lesson you have given,

Is the word of God to our children [Abby, Lexi, Milan, Marybeth, Alex, Caleb, Luke and Ben].

They are your pride and joy, your grandchildren.

We have now conquered one year without you,

And all of the wonderful memories continue to flood through.

There is an empty space where you once stood.

But you would remind us that you are with Jesus and now ALL IS GOOD!

I thank God for blessing my life with you,

I love you so much Daddy, I will see you soon.
