GREENVILLE — A Union City, Ohio, man will spend four days in jail and must pay $250 after pleading guilty to a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Matthew Pisano, 33, pleaded guilty Tuesday to the first-degree misdemeanor count in Darke County Common Pleas Court. He was arrested by Union City Police, accused of assaulting his wife February 6 during an incident where the two were both reportedly intoxicated and he sought to prevent her from driving to a bar. He was originally charged with third-degree felony domestic violence.

Pisano was represented by defense attorney Patrick Mulligan. Assistant Prosecutor Jesse Green spoke for the state.

Mulligan told the court that while Pisano’s actions on the night in question were “over the top,” he suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and is seeking medical help for his condition.

“Were his actions over the top? Yes. But we don’t want him to lose his employment. He is still close with his children and his help is still needed for the kids,” he said. He informed the court the couple was in the process of seeking a divorce.

“I’m trying to take the right steps to get back to where I should be,” Pisano told the court.

Following his guilty plea, Common Pleas Court Judge Jonathan P. Hein sentenced Pisano to serve four additional days in jail to time already served. His jail time will be scheduled as to allow him to maintain his current employment. He was also sentenced to pay court costs, a $250 fine, and will be on community control sanctions for at least 12 months. Pisano must also receive counseling for mental and substance abuse issues.
