GREENVILLE — During the June 15 Greenville City School District (GCSD) Board of Education (BOE) meeting, the board gave notice that Treasurer Carla Surber will retire, July 31, effective August 14, and is seeking employment with the District in such position following retirement.
In addition, the board said it will give consideration to employing Treasurer Surber at the July 20 regular Board of Education meeting as a retired/rehired treasurer, during public participation.
“I am retiring due to the fact that my age and years of service adversely impact me in the retirement system, should I stay in the system, with the major changes that begin on August 1,” Surber said. “We are still working through details, but right now it appears that I will be rehired by the Board of Education. You are seeing more and more of these circumstances as the retirement system works to modify its financial position and continue to support current and future retirees. This is the only reason that I felt that I needed to consider retirement.”
The pension reform changes from School Employees Retirement System (SERS) of Ohio passed in 2012 consist of an increase in the age and years of service requirements that determine a member’s retirement eligibility. These changes were implemented to address the longer life expectancy of retirees. Members who have fewer than 25 years of service credit on or after August 1, 2017 must require under the new retirement eligibility requirements.
In addition, the board is giving consideration for rehire at the July 20 regular BOE meeting of retired Bus Drivers Allen Cox and Kathleen Custer and Retired Bus Aide/Para Professional Linda Cox.
