UNION CITY, Ohio — Patrons of a closed Union City, Ohio, supermarket won’t have to wait long to get their local grocery store fix.
Sutton’s Foods of Arcanum is opening a new location in Union City, occupying the former Marsh Supermarket, 731 East Elm Street, which closed its doors in May.
Josh Urlage, vice president of Sutton’s, said he hopes to have the new store open and ready for business by July 24.
“We’ve looked at different locations to expand for years,” he said. “We felt like Union City was a nice location, similar to Arcanum. It’s a great opportunity for us.”
Marsh closed in May, two years after a rebranding effort which saw its name revert back from Main Street Market. The Union City Marsh was joined by the shuttering of other Marsh Supermarkets in a corporate decision which saw multiple locations in the region closed in 2017.
Sutton’s Foods is a longtime institution at 605 North Main Street in Arcanum, founded in 1934 by Roy and Nola Sutton. The grocery is currently owned by Kirby and Lori Sutton, third-generation owners, with Urlage and his wife Shala actively involved in its operation.
Urlage said the Union City Sutton’s will be a full-service grocery, offering the same amenities as the Arcanum store.
“We will have fresh produce, a meat department, a bakery and a deli,” he said. “One thing we hang our hat on is customer service. That, and a family atmosphere, are the big things for us.”
“It’s also to help the Union City community,” he added. “Offering a full-service grocery store in Union City was very important to us.”
Urlage also said Sutton’s will be employing many former Marsh employees, including former Marsh Supermarket Manager Bart Feight.
“We’ve also hired two assistant managers, a produce manager, grocery manager, and deli manager,” he said. Sutton’s is also accepting applications for open positions. Urlage said those interested can apply at either the Union City or Arcanum location.
Currently, the building is undergoing renovations, with plumbing and sealing work being performed and painting taking place inside and out. A sign company will be creating new signage for the grocery. An official grand opening celebration will likely take place soon after the Darke County Fair, according to Urlage.
