Afternoon thunderstorm knocks trees, lines onto county roads

DARKE COUNTY — On Tuesday, high winds from an afternoon thunderstorm knocked trees onto various roadways in Darke County, keeping state, county and municipal road crews busy.

The southern half of the county was most affected by the storm.

State Route 49 south of Greenville was down to one lane of traffic as crews worked to remove a tree that had fallen near the intersection of 49 and Hogpath Road.

At the 500 block of East Fifth Street in Greenville, a transformer and electric lines were knocked down into a tree.

In New Madison, trees fell across Jefferson and Wayne Streets, and on New Garden Road near New Madison, the road was impeded by multiple felled trees, electric lines and poles.

Trees also fell across State Route 503 at the 700 block; Arcanum-Ithaca Road at the 900 block; New Garden and Eaton Ft. Nesbit in New Paris; State Route 49 and Schnorf-Jones Road, Arcanum; the 1000 block of Frazers Road near Castine; and a tree reportedly fell onto a house at the 100 block of State Route 121.

Tree limbs also fell on power lines at State Route 502 and Hillgrove-Southern Road and the 100 block of State Route 121.

Wires were reported down in a ditch in the 9800 block of Darke-Montgomery County Line Road.

At the 9600 block of State Route 722, power lines were reported down into a tree with smoke and flames showing.

At 2:39 p.m., the National Weather Service (NWS) issued a severe thunderstorm warning for southern Darke County which lasted until 3 p.m. Winds up to 60 miles per hour were recorded. There were no reported injuries.

A Flash Flood watch was in effect in Darke County and surrounding Ohio and Indiana counties until 2 a.m. July 12.
