Old Arcana restaurant announces it will close July 16

ARCANUM — A local restaurant at the center of a political controversy earlier this year announced it is closing its doors Sunday.

The Old Arcana, 109 West George Street, in Arcanum, made known the July 16 closure on its Facebook page and on its website.

“It is a fundamental truth that all good things must eventually come to an end,” read the post. “This message is to announce to all of our faithful guests that Sunday, July 16th will be our final day in business in our Arcanum location.”

“Our beautiful historic building has recently been sold and will soon have a brand new use. We’d like to send a heartfelt thank you to all of you who have visited with us, championed us and allowed us to feed you. Your patronage and friendship has been greatly appreciated,” continued the post.

The restaurant attracted controversy in February, when one of the restaurant’s owners, chef Jeffrey Besecker, posted that the eatery would be closed February 20, Presidents Day — calling it “Not my Presidents Day” — presumably as a protest against newly inaugurated President Donald Trump.

Many social media users who saw this post, and other anti-Trump diatribes by Besecker, vowed to boycott the restaurant. The financial effect of the boycott as it relates to the restaurant’s closure is unknown.

The news of Old Arcana’s closure brought different reactions this week.

Facebook user Dorothy Tomlinson Miller wrote, “I love your Restarant. Sad day in Arcanum. Hope you relocate. What a loss.”

“Congrats on a great run and best of luck on your next tasty adventure!” said Erin Paul.

The post also indicated the owners are seeking out interested parties willing to purchase the business. Attempts to contact the restaurant owners and the building’s owner for comment were unsuccessful.
