GREENVILLE — Bond was set at $1 million for a man arrested near Greenville, accused of murdering his former girlfriend.
Roy E. Owens Jr., 56, of Elyria, Ohio, shackled at his wrists and ankles, was brought into Darke County Common Pleas Court by Darke County Sheriff’s Deputies Thursday for an extradition hearing.
Owens was arrested by deputies Wednesday after crashing his vehicle into a pole on State Route 49 near Woodington, north of Greenville. He was apprehended, wearing only socks and underwear, and threatening to harm himself with a knife. After Owens was taken into custody, deputies found the body of a female in the trunk of the car. The body is presumed to be that of his ex-girlfriend, Linnea Satterfield of Elyria. A positive identification or cause of death has not yet been confirmed.
Satterfield’s sister reported the woman missing July 17. Police found indications of a struggle and blood at Owens’ home when it was searched. Satterfield was reportedly in the process of moving out of their shared apartment when she disappeared.
Owens was mostly silent during the hearing, answering most questions with a nod or head shake. Darke County Common Pleas Court Judge Jonathan P. Hein explained the defendant’s rights to him and the process of extradition back to Lorain County. Owens signed documents waiving his rights to counsel and waiving his rights to an extradition hearing in Darke County.
“The waiver of council applies only to this hearing, is that correct?” Owens asked.
“That’s exactly right,” said Judge Hein.
In addition to aggravated murder, a first-degree felony, Owens has been charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, and fourth-degree felony domestic violence. He will face the charges in Elyria Municipal Court.
Darke County Prosecuting Attorney R. Kelly Ormsby asked the court to set bond at $1 million. Judge Hein agreed, given the severity and number of charges.
Six detectives from the Elyria Police Department traveled to Greenville late Wednesday to question Owens and assist in the investigation.
