VERSAILLES – Versailles had 53 boys in the fourth through sixth grades attend its youth football camp this week.
The Versailles High School football coaches led the camp along with members of the Tigers’ high school football team.
“It was a fun week,” Versailles football coach Adam Miller said. “We taught them some offense, defense. We taught them a little bit of kicking. Just trying to expose them to the game of football.”
The top goal for the three-day camp is for the boys to get exposure to the sport, Miller said, and to have fun playing the game.
Throughout the camp the boys showed a lot of progress in the skills they learned.
“Early on you’ve got some kids that haven’t really played a whole lot of football and once you start teaching them some of the basic techniques and mechanics of things you know they definitely got a lot better by the third day,” Miller said.
Miller also was pleased with his high school players, who acted as coaches throughout the week for the boys and led games of touch football. It was a fun week for the campers and the high school players, he said.
“They did a good job,” Miller said. “They’ve always been coached their whole life, and it’s a different experience when they get to coach people. It’s a good experience for them. It gets them to learn some of the younger kids’ names and develop some relationships.”
