GREENVILLE — The 2017 Junior Fairboard Election results are in!
Beef Department: Kimberly Winner; Dairy Department: Victoria Wuebker; Dog Department: Mathew Knight and Alisha Rismiller; Goat Department: Cole Spitler; Horse Department: Sarah Clark and Ashley Penny; Poultry Department: Zeb Hannan and Elisabeth Williams; Rabbit Department: Courtney Bucklew; Sheep Department: Emma Peters; Youth Building 4-H: Raylea Richards and Faith Wilker; Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA): Hannah Rammel.
The requirements to run for a position on the junior fairboard are as follows: all members are either 4-H, Future Farmers of America (FFA), FCCLA, Girl Scout, or Boy Scout members; at least 14-years-old as of January l, and not past their 18th birthday on January l; exhibiting in at least one of the following project areas: beef, sheep, swine, dairy, horses, dogs, poultry, rabbits, goats, cats, Youth Building for 4-H and for FFA and 4-H Family and Consumer Sciences. In addition, applicants must be an active member in their youth organization for one year prior to running. Junior fairboard members are elected for a two year term, unless otherwise indicated. To vote, all Junior Fair exhibitors can vote only in the department they are exhibiting in, at this year’s Junior Fair, and must have a Junior Fair Exhibitor Pass.
Amber Barga, of Yorkshire, is a first-year Junior Fairboard member. Her 4-H Club is Patterson Patchers and her involvement is in General Projects.
“I had no knowledge about junior fair board until a couple years back, and I decided to run,” she said. “I saw the people, but I never really understood it until a friend that is a member talked to me about it. I wanted to see more about the behind-the-scenes aspect of the fair, and how everything was put together. Definitely, this week, I have seen a lot more of how the junior fairboard office runs. Branching out and seeing different parts of the fair was the biggest reason why I did it.”
While there is plenty of work, Barga said being part of the fairboard is a way to make new friends, as different schools are represented. But getting a voice in some of the decisions is very important.
“Whoever becomes part of the junior fair board, attends the meetings and gets to express generally what other groups want to have happen at the fair,” she said.
