Ansonia football team loses to Riverside

ANSONIA – The Ansonia football team was within striking distance late but came up short on Friday night, losing 26-17 to Riverside.

Riverside struck first with Caleb Stevens completing a 15-yard touchdown pass to Caleb Wright to put the Pirates up 6-0 in the first quarter.

Midway through the second quarter Riverside scored again and converted a 2-point conversion to lead 14-0. Late in the quarter Ansonia got on the scoreboard with a 25-yard field goal by Michael Hall, making it 14-3.

Ansonia pulled to within 14-9 in the second half with a touchdown pass from Hunter Buckingham to Aydan Sanders.

After Riverside scored to go up 20-9, Buckingham connected with Hunter Muir for a long touchdown pass. The Tigers added a two-point conversion to pull within 20-17. However, that’s as close as Ansonia would get as Riverside went on to win 26-17.

Buckingham was 5-for-10 passing for 198 yards and two touchdowns.

Muir caught four passes for 169 yards and a touchdown. Aydan Sanders caught one pass and scored a touchdown.

Cody Sanders ran the ball five times for 35 yards. Brock Shellhaas had seven carries for 29 yards.

Muir led Ansonia with 10 tackles. Aydan Sanders had eight tackles, and Rygh Fortkamp had six tackles including a tackle for a loss. Shellhaas intercepted a pass.

Ansonia fell to 0-1 with the loss while Riverside improved to 1-0. Ansonia will travel to Tri-County North, who is coming off a 34-7 loss to Brookville, on Friday in a non-conference game.
