Greenville boys soccer team ties Trotwood-Madison 3-3

GREENVILLE – Greenville let its 2-0 lead slip away Tuesday evening but then battled back late to force a 3-3 draw with Trotwood-Madison in Greater Western Ohio Conference boys soccer action.

Greenville coach Mark Coppess saw some positive signs from his team in the game against Trotwood, but overall he was disappointed in the Green Wave’s performance.

“For the first 70 minutes we played terrible then we spent the last 10, 15 minutes playing like we should be able to play,” Coppess said. “Hopefully it’s a wakeup call.”

Even though the Green Wave didn’t play up to their coach’s standards early in the game, they still managed to build a 2-0 lead.

The Wave scored the game’s first goal in the first 10 minutes of play as Tani Mancillas scored off an Alex Hutt corner kick to put Greenville up 1-0.

Midway through the period the Green Wave increased their advantage to 2-0. Trotwood saved a shot by Hutt, but Ben Davidson got the rebounded and scored to put Greenville up by two goals.

“We’re finally putting some goals on the board,” Coppess said.

With 14:40 remaining in the half, Trotwood-Madison broke its scoreless drought with a goal by Carter Mims to make it a 2-1 game.

Then with almost 29 minutes remaining in the second half, Trotwood’s Mouhamad Kane scored to knot the score at 2-2.

“Usually we’re pretty strong in the back,” Coppess said, “and we gave up two quick to let them tie it up in the second half.”

The score remained tied for just three-and-a-half minutes as Trotwood took its first lead of the game when JazCeyah Harris-McDavid scored on a penalty kick to put the Rams up 3-2.

Greenville played from behind for almost 15 minutes, but with 10:31 remaining in the game Hutt scored off a Jacob Maher assist to tie the score at 1-1.

“He’s coming,” Coppess said of Hutt, who had a goal and two assists Tuesday evening. “He’s young, but he’s coming along. He did a really good job.”

Both teams had chances to retake the lead in the final minutes, including a penalty kick attempt for Greenville, but neither team was able to score, and the game ended in a 3-3 draw.

Greenville, which now is 0-3-1 and 0-1-1 in the GWOC, still has a lot of room for improvement, Coppess said.

“We’re not there yet,” he said. “Not even close yet. Nope. We’re going to struggle against the tough teams. The Piquas and the Troys and the Tipps, we’re going to struggle, Vandalia and them kind of schools. We’ll get there. Keep working on it.”
