WEST ALEXANDRIA – Franklin Monroe got off to a fast start against Twin Valley South on Thursday, dominating the first two sets 25-17 and 25-12.

It looked as though the Lady Jets would make an early night of it and take an early bus ride home. But the Jets relaxed in the third set and let the Panthers race off to an early lead.

And despite several timeouts to get things right, the Jets had to slog their way back. They did close in the end but fell 23-25 after making a gallant run at the end of the set.

The last set saw Franklin Monroe battle back and forth with South but finally grind the Panthers down to win the set and match 25-19.

The Jets had a taller front line and used that to their advantage. However, their second line also did a good job of getting the set and pass to the front line for a spike.

Twin Valley South has a shorter team and had problems defending at times. But the Panthers also made some mental mistakes in the first two sets that gave the Jets some easy points.

In the third set FM seemed to relax. And South took an early advantage, quickly building a 6-1 lead. The Jets took a timeout to try and change momentum and get back into a winning rhythm.

They ate away at the lead and finally tied the score at 23-all. But at this critical point, a serve went out of bounds and the rally fizzled. South got the next two points to win and force Franklin Monroe to stay around for one more set.

Twin Valley South had a narrow lead early in the last set, but Franklin Monroe caught up and tied it at 7-all. South had a nice rally and pulled within 2 17-19 late in the match, but FM fended off this attempt and rallied down the stretch for a comfortable 25-19 win.

“We came out ready to go, and I thought we played well those first two sets,” Franklin Monroe volleyball coach Angie Filbrun said. “We were in control, and then we just seemed to lose focus when we came out for the third set. So for the last set we had to get them refocused, and when we did, we played well. We were looking for someone to step up and be a leader.”

Unofficially Makenzie Kreitzer, Kennedy Morris and Belle Cable each had 15 digs. Kreitzer had eight kills while Corina Conley and Cassidy Spatz both had six. Morris had three ace serves.

Next week Franklin Monroe plays against Tri-County North and National Trail.
