Matthew Joseph Cain in custody after fleeing traffic stop

GREENVILLE — Matthew Joseph Cain, 32, is being detained in the Darke County Jail after attempting to elude law enforcement following a traffic stop.

According to Miami County State Highway Patrol Dispatcher Brian Gettinger, the following is based on report released at the scene from Sergeant David Robison, Ohio Highway Patrol, Piqua Post.

At approximately 3 p.m., Friday, September 1, authorities attempted to conduct a traffic stop on Cain for speeding. Cain failed to stop his sedan and broke through a perimeter the authorities had set up at Gettysburg-Pitsburg Road. He wrecked his vehicle and before law enforcement could get to his car, Cain exited the vehicle and ran into a cornfield. Two passengers who remained in his vehicle identified Cain and were released.

Area residents reported to the authorities there was a subject on-foot near the area. The State Highway Patrol utilized a State Patrol aircraft from Columbus and two canine units to check the area. Cain was arrested north of State Route 571, near Delisle-Fourman Road, near Pitsburg. Cain’s actions do not appear to be drug or alcohol related, according to the report.

The State Highway Patrol will present new charges to the Darke County Prosecutor’s Office stemming from the incident, including speeding, fleeing and eluding and possibly obstruction. He is currently charged with possessing criminal tools and drug possession, both fifth-degree felonies. He also awaits arraignment on three misdemeanor charges.
