Burn Dog Poker Run celebrating 10th anniversary

GREENVILLE — A Harley Davidson motorcycle giveaway, ‘All-Out’ Dyno Drags tandem drag races, and an auction for a custom Harley Davidson picnic table are just a few of the new and exciting events you won’t want to miss at this year’s Burn Dog Poker Run. Benjamin and Ashley Hoying, the people behind the Burn Dog Poker Run, have worked to grow this event each year, with several new ideas forming for this big 10-year anniversary giveback.

“I want to give back to everyone who has supported it through the years,” said Ben. “This year is all about giving back to all who have made this event successful.”

The Burn Dog poker run started in 2008 when a group of friends wanted to remember a friend, Louis “Burnie” Wimbley Jr., who passed away in a motorcycle accident, and to help his family provide a headstone for his grave. Since the first year was such a success, Ben Hoying, creator of the event, continued it and began donating the proceeds to local families. The proceeds have helped cancer survivors, accident victims, and children with health problems since birth. All recipients from the past years are invited to this anniversary year’s event to be recognized.

The poker run will be held Saturday, September 9 at Sloopy’s, formerly Hot Rods and Harley’s, with sign up from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m., first bike out at 1. The event starts off with a ride to Cruizers in Russia, Duckfoot’s in Celina, Brick Street in Fort Recovery, The Whistle Stop in Ansonia, and back to Sloopy’s where there will be door prizes, a 50/50 drawing, raffle, auction, and bike games. One-of-a-kind awards can be won for various games such as the loudest pipes competition, burnout contest, tandem slalom, slow drags, and team slalom.

Registration is $20 per person, which includes a ticket for the Harley giveaway. Only one ticket is allowed per person, and you must be present to win.

“You don’t have to ride a motorcycle to join in the activities; anyone can come to Sloopy’s, register for the Harley giveaway, and watch bike games,” said organizers.

Tickets must be purchased by 7 p.m. and the Harley will be given away to one lucky Burn Dog participant at the end of the evening, after the bike games.

“The community has pulled together to get this event going this year with donations from local businesses, monetary contributions, and woodworking projects customized for this event. Biker’s Paradise will be there offering motorcycle related apparel and signs. A photographer will also be there taking photos throughout the day,” said organizers.
