Versailles girls golf team finishes 10th in OHSAA state tournament

COLUMBUS – The Versailles girls golf team improved by two strokes from last year in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division II state tournament.

Versailles shot a 739 team score with a 363 on Friday and a 376 on Saturday in the two-day state tournament at the Ohio State University Gray Course in Columbus. The Tigers were tied with Chaminade Julienne for ninth place following Friday’s round but fell to 10th on Saturday as the Eagles beat the Tigers by 15 strokes on the second day of the tournament.

In the final team standings Versailles beat Kettering Archbishop Alter, who finished 11th with a 752, and fellow Midwest Athletic Conference member St. Henry, who finished 12th with a 761.

Versailles’ score of 739 was two strokes better than last year when the Tigers shot a 741. Despite the improvement they dropped two places in the team standings compared to a year ago.

Senior Jorja Pothast led Versailles in the 2017 state tournament as she shot an 80 on Friday and a 91 on Saturday for a total score of 171, finishing 26th overall.

Senior Lauren Durham finished 35th overall with a two-day total of 178, firing an 88 on Friday and a 90 on Saturday.

Junior Morgan Heitkamp finished 56th overall with a 194, shooting a 98 on Friday and a 96 on Saturday.

Junior Morgan Barlage shot a 97 on Friday and a 99 on Saturday for a total of 196, placing 60th overall.

Senior Anna Groff finished 66th overall with a 201, recording a 99 on Friday and a 102 on Saturday.

Eaton’s Sarah Willis won the individual state championship as she shot a one-under-par 139 in the 36-hole tournament. She shot a 72 on Friday and a 67 on Saturday.

Independence won the team state championship by firing a 652, which included a 320 on Friday and a 332 on Saturday.
