Tri-Village volleyball team defeats Tri-County North in OHSAA tournament opener

TROY – Just one week ago Tri-Village squared off with Tri-County North and came away with a hard-fought win in a game that went five sets.

The two teams found themselves matched up again on Wednesday in the first round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division IV volleyball sectional tournament.

“I thought we picked into a bracket that we had a chance to win a few games, and I knew it was going to be tough and that we were evenly matched with North,” Tri-Village coach Chris Brewer said. “We just played them last week, and it was close all the way through.”

In the opening set the Patriots went up 11-3, and it looked like they were in complete control; that was until left-hander Jasmine McAdams started serving.

McAdams would bring the Panthers all the way back then take a 13-12 lead. The Patriots then got down 20-14 before mounting a comeback, stunning Tri-County North with a 25-23 first set win.

“In that first game, we let No. 21 (McAdams) serve 10 straight points. All year long we have a stretch where we let someone run off a bunch of points and then we have a hard time recovering. But to our credit they were able to come back and win that first set,” Brewer said.

The second set was a long one and a dog fight … but this time it was Tri-County North making the plays late to win 25-21.

“Our girls struggled a little bit passing in the second game, and I told them that we needed to get back to the basics,” Brewer said after losing set two.

The Patriots would do just that in set three as they played solid – good service by Alana Holsapple, Breann Lipps and Lucie Morris, good digs by Kara Hollinger, good sets from Abbi Lipps and good finishes from Autumn Moore, Edie Morris and Maddie Downing on their way to a 25-17 win.

Tri-Village kept the momentum rolling into set four on its way to a 25-21 win and the match.

“It feels really good for this team to come here and get a first round tournament win,” a smiling Brewer said.

“The last time a Tri-Village team won a tournament game was 2013, and none of these girls were a part of that, so for them this is a nice moment,” Brewer added.

“I’m glad our girls came out tonight and fought for it … they could have easily just come out and wanted it to be over with, but they didn’t, and I’m proud of them for that,” Brewer said.

“After seeing Emmanuel Christian against Mississinawa I know we have our hands full on Saturday. It’s going to be a tough game, but I think we can compete. They have a good record and a good player in the middle, No. 00, so we will have to key in on her … but we have a few days to practice, and we’ll be ready to go,” Brewer concluded.

Tri-Village improved to 9-13 overall and will be back on Saturday in Troy, taking on 17-5 Emmanuel Christian with a 6:30 p.m. start time.
