Versailles cross country runner Joe Spitzer wins OHSAA district championship

CEDARVILLE – Versailles cross country runner Joe Spitzer won an Ohio High School Athletic Association district championship on Saturday at Cedarville.

Spitzer paced the field of 157 runners with a time of 16:06.91, winning the Division II boys race by more than 25 seconds over Tippecanoe sophomore Bryce Conley.

As a team, Versailles’ boys finished 10th out of 21 schools. Eaton, Brookville, Tippecanoe, Springfield Shawnee, Oakwood, Waynesville and Milton-Union qualified for the OHSAA regional meet.

Following Spitzer, Versailles junior Stuart Baltes finished 43rd overall in 18:15.76, junior Brooks Blakeley finished 64th in 18:50.36, freshman Ryan Subler finished 65th in 18:53.61, freshman Noah Barga finished 66th in 18:53.87, freshman Matt Cromwell finished 80th in 19:18.83, and junior Brian Heitkamp finished 100th in 19:50.35.

Oakwood junior Dolan Johnson finished 28th with a time of 17:43.51, which set the cutoff for individuals qualifying for the regional meet.

Spitzer now will compete in the regional meet on Saturday at Troy. The Division II boys race is scheduled to begin at 2:15 p.m.
