VERSAILLES – With coaches and players from the Tigers’ first state championship team in 1967 on hand, the Versailles football team defeated New Bremen 21-6 in monsoon like conditions Friday night.

The rain was steady throughout the night and caused the passing game to be nonexistent.

“This is the most handcuffed I’ve felt; we just couldn’t pass,” Versailles coach Adam Miller said. “We made some adjustments at halftime and were finally able to get our blocks and get the ball in the end zone.”

Versailles completed the only pass of the game late in the fourth quarter.

Neither team was able to score in the first half. The Tiger defense held the Cardinals to 48 yards of offense in the first half while getting 107 all on the ground.

The Tigers finally got on the board when George Grow scored on a 21-yard run with 5:57 left in the third quarter. The score came the play after Noah Grisez recovered a fumble for Versailles.

The Tigers scored a minute and 44 seconds later on a 3-yard run by Kurtis Rutshilling. The touchdown was set up after a blocked punt.

“We tried to block the punt twice and didn’t get it,” Miller said. “We tried to return it, and we end up blocking it.”

Evan Hiestand blocked a punt around the 17-yard line of New Bremen and recovered it, running it to the 3-yard line.

Versailles scored its last touchdown in the fourth quarter. Starting at their own 49, the Tigers drove to the 1. Quarterback Noah Waymire took a keeper to the end zone, making it 21-0 with the extra point.

New Bremen got its lone score on the night with a 76-yard kickoff return.

The Cardinals attempted an onside kick, but the Tigers recovered. The Tigers drove to the Cardinal 2-yard line before turning the ball over on downs.

The Cardinals threw four straight incomplete passes and gave the ball back to the Tigers, who ran out the clock.

Versailles finished the season with a 4-6 overall record and 3-5 record in the MAC. New Bremen went 3-7 overall and 1-7 in the conference.
