UNION CITY, Ind. — A Union City, Indiana, man is behind bars after being caught with methamphetamine in his vehicle.

Shawn M. Kiser, 32, of 430 N. Chatham St., was arrested Wednesday afternoon during a traffic stop by Union City, Indiana police.

At 4:14 p.m., Patrolman Tristan DeHaven stopped a vehicle driven by Kiser at the 200 block of South Plum Street after he witnessed Kiser commit a traffic violation.

During the course of the traffic stop, Officer DeHaven requested a narcotic canine respond to the scene to conduct a free air sniff around the vehicle. Union City, Ohio Police Chief Mark Ater and his canine partner, Bruno, arrived on scene to assist. Shortly after their arrival, Chief Ater advised DeHaven Bruno had provided him with a positive indication for the presence of an odor of a narcotic.

A probable cause search of the vehicle resulted in officers locating nearly 15 grams of suspected methamphetamine, which has a street value of approximately $1,500, two clear gel capsules with an unknown white powdery substance, smoking instruments, several small plastic baggies and a digital scale.

Kiser was taken into custody and transported to the Randolph County Jail where he was charged with possession of methamphetamine (level 4 felony). The capsules with the white powdery substance will be sent to the Indiana State Police Crime Lab for analysis, which could possibly lead to more charges.

At the time of his arrest, Kiser was out on bond for two prior drug cases in Randolph County, including charges of methamphetamine and marijuana possession.

The Union City, Ohio Police Department posted on its Facebook page: “Awesome job Union City Indiana Police Department! This is a prime example of departments working together to make the community a better place! We may be two departments, but we have one goal, to take drugs off the street and make our community better!”
