GREENVILLE – Traffic was slowed on U.S. Route 127 south of Greenville Thursday morning due to a hydraulic fluid spill.
At approximately 10 a.m. Thursday, personnel from Greenville Township and New Madison fire departments along with deputies from the Darke County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to U.S. Route 127 in regards to a possible hydraulic fluid spill.
According to the Darke County Sheriff’s Department, a Best Way Disposal garbage truck was northbound on U.S. Route 127 when an unknown maintenance issue caused a leak of hydraulic fluid. It is estimated that 30 to 50 gallons of fluid was spilled over nearly three quarters of a mile starting in the 4100 block and extending through the 4600 block of U.S. Route 127 before the vehicle pulled off the roadway into a commercial drive.
A request for assistance from the Ohio Department of Transportation was made for both material and equipment to aid in the cleanup.
Traffic was slowed in both lanes of travel as sand was brought in and spread on the roadway by ODOT crews to absorb the fluid and prevent any hazard to passing motorists. The roadway then was cleared of the sand, allowing traffic to resume as normal without any further incident.
