New lineup leads Jets in sweep of Newton

PITSBURG – Franklin-Monroe hosted Newton in volleyball action Tuesday night. The Jets took the match in straight sets 25-13, 25-15 and 25-11.

The Jets came out a little slow, and in fact trailed 7-6 in the first set before finally going up 10-7, but Newton rallied 11-10 before the Jets got traction behind the serving of Belle Cable and strong play at the net from Chloe Peters expanding their lead to 18-11 and then cruised to the first set win of 25-13.

“I felt like we played a little bit on our heels to start the match,” Franklin-Monroe coach Angie Filbrun said. “We are battling an injury and playing a new lineup tonight, so I think that was some of it. We’re just trying to figure everyone out and eventually we made it work.”

The second set was déjà vu as Franklin-Monroe finally pulled away midway through for the 25-15 win. The Jets would go on to an easy third set win 25-11.

“We won tonight, but I don’t feel like this was one of our best matches,” Filbrun stated.

“The girls who had to play in different positions tonight honestly did a good job. Chloe McGlinch went in and set for Brigette Filbrun and she does an incredible job. I can just put her wherever and know she is going to do a good job. Our two sophomores Stella Shellabarger and Janessa Koffer helped out and both of did exactly what I needed them to do and that is what makes this group a good team,” Filbrun praised.

Franklin-Monroe game stat leaders were Chloe Peters (12 kills, 11 digs), Corina Conley (12 kills, 6 blocks), Kennedy Morris (18 serve points, 16 assists, 11 digs), Belle Cable (11 serve points, 19 digs) and Chloe McGlinch (13 assists, 12 serves points, 10 digs).

With the tournament draw on Sunday, Coach Filbrun is very excited and expects to receive a good pick.

“Our team is looking forward to the tournament. It’s an exciting time of the year.” Filbrun concluded.

Franklin-Monroe improves to 14-4 overall and 8-2 in the Cross County Conference with two league games remaining. The Jets will be back in action on Thursday when they travel to take on the Bethel Bees.
