TROY – It was a long day on Wednesday for the Greenville girls tennis players, but it was well worth it in the end as two singles players and one doubles team qualified for next week’s Division I district tournament.
Natalie Milligan, who was the No. 2 seeded singles player, and unseeded Emily Marchal each qualified for the district, as did Greenville’s first doubles team of Marabelle Lance and Anna Manges. They also were the No. 2 seed at the Troy sectional.
Milligan had a first-round bye and won two matches Wednesday to reach the sectional semifinals, while Marchal played a play-in match on Monday and then won two more matches on Wednesday to advance.
The doubles team defeated both Northmont and Fairborn to earn a district spot.
“I think it is the first time we have had four kids qualify for districts,” GHS tennis coach Jim Koontz said. “I’m happy for all of them. They all played well.”
The sectional semifinals and finals matches will be played on Saturday morning at Troy to determine seeding for the district meet, which will be held at 9 a.m. On Thursday, Oct. 11 at the ATP Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason.
GIRLS GOLF
Garland advances to district
Greenville senior Jada Garland shot an 87 on Wednesday in the Division I girls sectional tournament at Yankee Trace, which was good enough to qualify her to next week’s district meet.
The Greenville team shot 403 and finished eighth out of 14 teams.
“Jada played well today,” GHS coach Tracy Haines said. “She knew she was playing well, but did not think she was playing well enough to advance. I think it is great for her to advance to district again. She did it her sophomore year and again this year. It is great that she is going to district her senior year.”
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
Vandalia Butler 3, Greenville 0
Greenville dropped three straight sets to lose the overall match to Vandalia Butler on Tuesday by scores of 25-15, 25-21, 25-23.
Koryann Elliott led the attack for the Lady Wave with 9 kills. Abbie Yoder added 7 kills and 1 block and Brooke Stachler had 5 aces and 15 assists to also help lead Greenville. Other player stats were Libby McKinney (14 assists, 5 digs), Josi Worden (9 digs) and Shelby Herman (2 aces, 13 digs).
Sidney 3, Greenville 1
The week began with a loss for the Lady Wave volleyball team. Greenville won the first set with Sidney 25-17, but then lost the next three by scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-20 to lose the match.
Emma Klosterman totaled 9 kills, while Koryann Elliott, Madilyn Francis, Josi Worden and Abbie Yoder each had 7 kills to lead Greenville. Yoder also had 3 blocks and Francis had 2 blocks. Other contributors were Shelby Herman with 2 aces and 21 digs, Brooke Stachler with 25 assists and 9 digs and Libby McKinney with 10 assists.
Mississinwa Valley 3, Riverside 2
It was a marathon match between Mississinawa Valley and Riverside, but it was the Blackhawks who prevailed by scores of 25-21, 16-25, 25-18, 23-25, 16-14.
MV had a small lead in the final set at 10-5 behind the serving of Leah Scholl, but Riverside made a comeback to toe the game at 14-14. Mississinawa was able to win the next two points to capture the set and overall match.
The Blackhawaks were led by Sidnie Hunt with 23 assists, 17 kills and 22 digs. Olivia Murphy collected 17 assists and 26 digs, while Riley Price added 2 aces, 13 kills and 23 digs in the win. Other contributors included Kya Lavy (5 aces, 5 blocks), Leah Scholl (2 aces, 19 digs) and Taylor Stachler (2 aces).
