ARCANUM — A medical condition may be the cause of a rollover accident Monday evening that left one person transported to the hospital.

At approximately 5:40 p.m., emergency personnel from New Madison Fire Department and Arcanum Rescue along with deputies from the Darke County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of U.S. Route 127 and Hollansburg Sampson Road on a rollover accident with entrapment.

According to deputies on the scene, a red Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling northbound on U.S. Route 127 when it was struck from behind by a northbound orange Ford Escape.

The Hyundai was forced off the left side of the roadway from the force of the impact, coming to rest in the ditch of the southbound lane. The Ford traveled off the right side of the roadway, rolling at least once before coming to rest on the edge of the northbound lane.

The female driver and lone occupant of the Ford Escape had to be mechanically extricated from her vehicle by the New Madison Fire Department before being treated for her injuries and transported to Wayne HealthCare by Arcanum Rescue. The male driver and lone occupant of the Hyundai was uninjured in the accident and refused treatment by EMS at the scene.

It is the belief of the deputies that the accident was caused by a medical condition suffered by the driver of the Ford Escape.

The accident will remain under investigation by the Darke County Sheriff’s Department.
