Residents encouraged to celebrate America Recycles Day by recycling correctly

GREENVILLE – Thursday marks the 21st annual America Recycles Day, and Rumpke wants to remind residents that the best way to celebrate is to recycle correctly.

“Every day, we receive items in recycling containers and drop boxes that can’t be recycled or that might actually hinder the recycling process by preventing the correct items from being recycled,” Rumpke Corporate Communications Manager Molly Yeager said.

Yeager said that items like plastic bags, batteries, propane tanks and clothing continue to make its way into recycling containers – and they are causing harm.

“Batteries, propane tanks and aerosol cans with material still inside can cause fires in trucks or at the plant, putting employees or the motoring public at risk, while items like plastic bags and clothing wreak havoc on the sorting equipment, making it harder for the correct items to be recycled,” Yeager said.

Rumpke accepts a variety of common household items in its recycling program, including:

  • Bottles (glass and plastic)
  • Cans (steel and aluminum)
  • Paper, paperboard and cardboard
  • Cartons

“We want people to recycle. We want to make it easy, accessible and affordable,” Yeager said. “However, for recycling to work, we need to only place the items on the list into recycling containers.”

Rumpke offers curbside recycling and community drop box recycling in the area. To learn more about options for a household, contact Rumpke at 1-800-828-8171.
