ANSONIA – An accident Friday morning involving an Ansonia Local School bus carrying special needs children left five students transported to a local hospital.
At approximately 8:15 a.m., Ansonia Rescue and officers from the Ansonia Police Department were dispatched to the intersection of East Canal Street and Tiger Way in regards to an accident involving an Ansonia Local School bus carrying students.
According to Ansonia Police Chief Frank Shapiro, the school bus, carrying five students, was hit head on while transporting students to the school. A blue Chevy truck was westbound on East Canal Street when the driver attempted to make a right hand turn onto Tiger Way and collided with the school bus.
Chief Shapiro added that the male driver, uninjured in the accident, had cleared only a small amount of space on his frozen windshield, which prevented him from having a full field of view, causing the accident.
The female driver of the bus was evaluated on the scene before refusing transport to the hospital.
All five students on the bus also were evaluated on the scene by Ansonia Rescue before being transported to Wayne HealthCare for precautionary reasons. Parents of the students involved in the incident were in the process of being contacted and notified of the accident by school officials.
The accident will remain under investigation by the Ansonia Police Department.
