Lady Tiger bowlers knock down Russia
On Nov. 24, the Lady Tiger bowlers bowled against the Russia Raiders at McBo’s Lanes in Versailles. The Lady Tigers defeated Russia 2,383-2,167.
The Tigers got off to a good start rolling 829 to Russia’s 791 in the first game. Leading the way for the Tigers in the first game were Morgan Barlage (221), Kalysta Thobe (179) and Morgan Heitkamp (171). The Tigers started off the second game a little slow, but finished strong rolling 795 to Russia 702. Leading the way for the Tigers in the second game were Haddie Treon (181), Heitkamp (171), Lindsay Cheadle (159) and Thobe (148).
“Morgan Heitkamp had a nice day. She has been struggling with her timing a little, so it was nice to see her bowl two nice games” said Coach Tyler Phlipot.
The Tigers couldn’t catch any luck in the Baker games with scores: 151-153-136-181-138.
“I thought the girls threw the ball good in the bakers, but it just seemed we could not catch a break,” Phlipot said. “We would hit the pocket, but the pins wouldn’t fall resulting in a split. We are struggling a little in making consistent first shots in our regular games to start the match. The consistent shots will come it will just take time and repeat reps in practice. I have a hard-working group I just keep telling them it’s not how we start the season it’s how well we finish.”
The Lady Tiger have a big week ahead of them, traveling to Troy Thursday. On Saturday the Lady Tigers will travel to Columbus to bowl in an invitation only Kick Off Tournament. They will be taking on 27 of the best teams in the state including some Division I and Division II schools.

Tigers were not Spared against the Raiders
The Tigers lost total pins to the Russia Raiders at McBo’s on Nov. 24. The Tigers opened the first game with Landon Henry throwing five strikes in a row. Henry led the Tigers with a score of 218 for this game. His fellow left-hander, Alex Kunk, put up a 164 to help the Tigers, who also used Jordan Cordonnier, Kunk, Matthew Francis, Henry and Sam Bensman with subs Derek Morris and Jay Mumaw. Versailles fell short with a total of 796 to the Raider’s 838.
The second game consisted of Morris, Kunk, Mumaw, Henry and Bensman with sub Chad Shimp. Bensman and Mumaw started the Tigers out with turkeys. Morris led the Tigers with a total of 177 pins. Versailles was able to win this game 791 to Russia’s 699.
Baker games brought about a strong start with Cordonnier, Shimp, Francis, Bensman and Morris. The team only had two open frames for a total of 213 to the Raider’s 160.
The second baker game consisted of Cordonnier, Shimp, Francis, Bensman and Morris. The Tigers only had one open frame, but they were unable to catch the Raiders. Versailles scored 179 while Russia scored 186.
The third baker game featured a higher total for the team of Cordonnier, Shimp, Francis, Bensman and Morris with Henry as a sub. Unfortunately, the Tiger’s 182 was beaten by the Raider’s 201.
The fourth baker game was comprised of Cordonnier, Shimp, Francis, Bensman and Morris. Shimp and Bensman kept the Tigers strong by marking in all their frames. The Tigers 148 fell short of the Raider’s 191.
The final baker game consisted of Cordonnier, Shimp, Francis, Bensman and Morris with sub Mumaw. The Raider’s score of 214 beat the Versailles’ score of 160.
The Tigers could not be spared this match and succumbed to the Raider’s by 20 total pins .Overall, the Tiger’s total was 2,469 to Russia’s total of ,2489.
Coach Tyler Philpot stated, “ I am really proud of the team on how well they bowled. We were down after the first game and they battled to take the lead back after the second game. The team bowled well in the bakers, we just could not put a bunch of strikes together. Russia caught fire in the bakers and there was nothing we could do about that.”
The Tigers travel to Troy on Thursday and then to Columbus on Saturday to bowl in an invitational tournament with Division I and II teams. It is the best of the best with 32 teams in the boys division.
Versailles grad leads Edison State women to win
The Edison State women’s basketball team went to 6-1 on the season after cruising to a 76-30 victory at MU-Hamilton Saturday.
Clair Schmitmeyer (Versailles HS) led the team with 16 points. Sarah Bergman of Botkins had 13 and Kailani Broyles of Massillon Washington and Piqua’s Lauryn Gray each had 12.
The Chargers return to action on Wednesday in a big league game at Sinclair.
