Make a Friend Day is an unofficial holiday on Feb. 11 that encourages people to stop and take stock of their friend list and to make new friends. Since we are social animals it makes sense that we need friends to feel fulfilled and happy. Sometimes in the rush of our daily life we tend to forget our old friends and also forget to make new friends. Since today is Make a Friend Day, please be inspired to step out of your comfort zone and try to meet new people and a make new friend or two!
Did you know that studies show that on average people will remain long-term friends with one out of every 12 people they consider to be friends? Research has shown that people with a diverse group of friends are more tolerant, open to new ideas, and empathetic than people who have a small or a non-diverse group of friends. Making new friends can broaden your horizon, learn about new cultures and different parts of society. Need some tips on how to do that? Where you can meet new people, be adventurous and attend an event you would have never thought of attending; you might meet your new future friends there!
The 50th anniversary of AHS Class of ’69 basketball and track teams were honored at the home basketball game on Friday, Feb. 1. In attendance were former Coach John Hennemyre, teammates: David Gray, Jim Troutwine, Steve Christ, Frank Cheadle, Gary Riegle, Kent McGlinch, Wayne Fisher, Jerry Garrison, Phil Cox, Don Kochersberger, and Scott Sutton’s sons – Adam and Justin. Also on hand were cheerleaders Brenda (Bevins) Eubank and LaJeanne (Etzler) Reigle. Basketball members unable to attend were Jim Wiliams, Dan Riegle, Chris Hanes, and the late Scott Sutton and late Coach Dick Graeff. What a wonderful memory for those of us who watched and witnessed this event, hard to believe it was 50 years ago!! Go Trojans!!
Tickets go on sale this week at The Rose Post on Feb. 15 for the upcoming Arcanum Garden Club Purse Poppy Bingo! The event will be held on March 15. The Grand Prize is a pearl, white-pebbled tote by Coach valued at $350.
Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society will host Jerry Stichter on Thursday, March 14 starting at 7 p.m. Jerry is a well-known local auctioneer with many years of experience. Have questions about what to do with collectible items or antiques you’ve accumulated over the years and want to downsize? You’ll have the opportunity to question Jerry about his expertise after 40 years in the business as an appraiser and an auctioneer.
Did you get your tickets yet? On March 7 the Arcanum Wayne Trail Historical Society will host the Darke County Center of the Arts Coffee House series with Lee Murdock. Lee is a talented instrumentalist on six and 12 string guitars and maintains ragtime, Irish, blues and folk styles with a flair for storytelling. The concert will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets may be purchased at DCCA, Fourman’s Variety Store and at the door.
Are you ready for Valentine’s Day? Valentine’s Day has come to be regarded as a day to celebrate love, not just romantic love, and cards are gifted to teachers, parents, friends, siblings, and sweethearts. Remember when you were a child in grade school and it was upmost importance to have the perfect decorated shoebox to accept your Valentine cards at the classroom party? Or that you chose the right card for each classmate? Do you still send out Valentine cards today? Perhaps you might want to purchase a couple of extra cards this year and send them out with a message to a shut-in or widow/widower in your neighborhood or a member of your church. Valentines are for more than just your sweetheart; it is a time to share the joy and love with all those important people in your life.
