GREENVILLE – The community is being asked to donate items for a Greenville High School FCCLA project, which in turn will benefit local domestic violence victims.
As part of their competition project for FCCLA, students are collecting items for the Darke County Domestic Violence Shelter from March 30 through April 6. Donations may be placed in a box just outside the entrance to the Double M Diner inside The Palace at 537 S. Broadway in downtown Greenville.
“We want our community to be involved in making a difference,” FCCLA sophomore Brittni Walker said.
The collection is part of the Greenville FCCLA chapter’s project that qualified for state competition, set for April 25-26.
At their recent regional competition, Walker said the chapter was encouraged to add more community involvement to its project.
“We want to draw attention to domestic violence,” Walker said of her fellow FCCLA students.
During this school year, the group conducted a collection or items already donated to the shelter and planned assemblies about domestic violence.
The group also surveyed the student body.
“We did a survey at school to see how much domestic violence has been or is currently happening,” among students, Walker said.
Even though some students were reluctant to discuss their experiences with abuse, the survey was revealing, Walker said.
“We found 68 percent of our student body had or were experiencing domestic violence,” Walker said, adding that the survey included the signs of domestic violence to help students be aware of what constitutes abuse.
Items the FCCLA will collect at the Double M Diner include paper products (napkins, plates, tissues, toilet paper), mini shampoos and conditioners. tooth brushes and toothpaste, non-perishable food items, children’s coloring books and crayons.
The box will be available for donations from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. through April 6. Monetary donations also will be accepted. Students ask that money not be left inside the box but taken inside the Double M Diner and given to an employee before 3 p.m.
