NEW MADISON – Old Glory will be flying along the main pathways in downtown New Madison as the American Legion places flags in honor of Memorial Day.
The Legion members will work on Saturday, May 18. The Memorial Day observance is approaching.
A drive was recently started at Post 245 when the Ladies Auxiliary contributed to the Legion’s plan to replace tattered and torn flags. Contributions are welcome and can be sent to the Legion at Post Office Box 127. You can personally give a donation at the Legion after 5 p.m., Thursday through Saturday.
The Auxiliary also will be busy with wreath preparations for the cemetery.
Poppy Days are May 17 and 18. Breakfast is served every morning from 7 to 10 a.m. and burgers and fries are served every Thursday beginning at 5 p.m.
The New Madison Kiwanis Club was successful last summer in recognizing Darke County veterans with the famous sausage sandwich event. And, the project will be repeated in June at the Darke County Fairgrounds. The club will serve area veterans from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (or while supplies last) on June 14 and 15. Free sandwiches will be offered to vets who show proper identification.
You won’t have a problem locating the Sausage Barn. It will be located in the familiar “fair” site and the public is invited to enjoy the sausage treat. Proceeds go to the Darke County Veterans Organization.
Flip your calendar to June and circle the dates of 14th and 15th.
Congratulations to Matt Miller, Tri-Village graduate, on being named President of the Park National Corporation. The announcement came from Newark.
The Darke County native will also serve on the board of directors for both The Park National Bank and Park National Corporation. He is the son of Nancy and Don Miller.
Raya Mikesell, daughter of Randy and Jodi Mikesell, will be among graduates at Miami University on May 18. A 2015 graduate of Tri-Village, she had already earned her associate of applied science from Edison State Community College. Raya will graduate cum laude with a bachelor of science in kinesiology and health with a major in nutrition, and with a concentration in dietetics. She has a minor in child studies and youth development.
Raya will begin a dietetic internship at the University of Virginia
Health System in September. She received a $1,000 scholarship from the Ohio Nutrition Council.

The Alumni dinner at Tri-Village will be held May 18. Flowers are available at the Tri-Village Greenhouse May 16-18 and May 23-25. Thursday and Friday hours will be from 3-7 p.m. and Saturday hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The United Methodist Church again sponsors a 5K race to support local ministries. The runners will be here early on June .
Garage sales are coming. The treasure hunters can find clothing and items on May 30, 31 and June l.
